The shield water lily (Nymphoides peltata) is an exceptionally decorative yet undemanding aquatic plant, perfect for garden ponds, natural swimming pools, and even smaller water features. It anchors in the pond bed, while its large, round floating leaves provide natural shade that helps maintain ecological balance in the water.
In summer, it blooms with striking yellow flowers that rise above the surface, attracting both attention and pollinators. Thanks to its rapid growth, it effectively suppresses algae and contributes to cleaner water.
It thrives best in sunny locations with a depth of 20 to 140 cm (8–55 in). Since this species is rare and legally protected in Slovakia, it is recommended to cultivate it only from legal and certified sources.
